‎Wouldn’t this be a great world if insecurity and desperation made us more attractive?

“Just friends” rarely remains so

Single men and women cannot be friends. At some point one of them is going to start being attracted to the other (usually, tho not always, the guy for the girl). This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can mean the end of the friendship if the romantic feelings are one-sided. On the positive side many great marriages have come about when friends fall for each other.

Go read the Ladder Theory for an explanation on how sexes view friendship with the opposite gender.

The cure for the common single

Some single people are deeply unhappy with their state. They wallow in self-pity. If you are one of them, I recommend spending time with married folk. 9 times out of 10 you will leave thankful that their life is not yours.

1. You realize just how unhappy you would be if you had to be married to any of those men (or women), even if you love them as friends.  Therefore, you have not met the Perfect Person for you, and while this is annoying, at least you are not married to Mr or Mrs Wrong.

2. Most wives and husbands don’t seem any happier than most singles. In fact many married people are unhappy for various reasons (joblessness, infertility, work stress). It really drives home that being married will not make you happy (in the long term) – not that it will make you unhappy, but being happy isn’t what it’s about. Unhappy singles often fall into the trap of thinking that getting married will make them feel fulfilled or that they will never be lonely again. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

3. Marriages often have a lot of pretty boring moments. And wives find that many men are boring once you get married to them. They don’t bother talking to you any more (for many men it’s enough that you’re just there – it’s mainly women who feel the need to connect through talking). Evenings are spent vegging out in front of the TV. Meanwhile, you, the single person, have the time and drive to go out into the Big World and make friends, volunteer, take a class, whatever. Ennui is not good enough for the single life.

4. Singles don’t have the most important person in their lives sniping at them for embarrassing them at a party. They are not driving anyone crazy with their nagging to put the toilet seat down.

5. Divorce sucks. Your chance of getting divorced is 0%.

So while marriage is a wonderful, important institution that is the basis of civilization, it is not a magic ticket to a perfect life. Make the most of your life, whatever state you are in.
